Komi

10/28/08 - Komi! Rated #3 in DC and I now know why. The ambience is very basic. Nothing ornate. Just simple fine-dining, white table-cloth decor. We sat one table away from the kitchen and could watch the staff at work. Their chef is well known, was named one of the top new chef's in 2007 Food and Wine and was working this night. We ordered a glass of wine and the chef's tasting menu, which is the only way to go at a place like this, if you ask me. The food was completely unique, artistic, and tantalizing. I was worried when the waiter delivered the goat for the main entree, but it was extremely tasty.

Here is what they served:
1. Amberjack sashimi - So tiny it is almost a joke eating it. But very yummy.
2. Scallops 2 ways (sashimi with mustard and truffle & scallop with sea urchin vinagrette)
3. Homemade lamb chorizo with black eyed peas
4. Salmon tartar - raw salmon cut into tiny cubes, served with cracker and something that I can't remember
5. Warm crab salad with shaved fennel - I really liked this one.
6. Fried salad cube. Essentially a fried, square cover over liquified iceberg lettuce. My least favorite
7. A tray of things including a mini foie gras sandwich, a semi-sweet nutty soup in a shot glass(very dessert-ish), a goat cheese s'more, and a little jelly cube (probably just to cleanse the buds before the goat cheese s'more)
8. Pasta course - Salmorejo with pancetta and egg (I didn't eat this one) and Local Pumpkin Ravioli with feta and pine nuts - Delicious and I'm not a fan of pumpkin
9. Slow roasted Goat Shoulder with a side of various homemade condiments
10. Pomogranete sherbert with pomegranate seeds on top to cleanse the palatte
11. A cheese course. Nothing special.
12. Dessert - Two desserts - Honey semifreddo. Greek donuts with chocolate marscapone. The house decaf was also excellent.

Note, since this review was written in 2008, Komi has been named the Washingtonian #1 restaurant multiple times.

5 out of 5 stars
